WSA Where Are They Now? – Planting Knowledge Through ALFI
A Story That Begins in a Greenhouse
In a farming community in Latin America, Ana Julia leads a group of women dedicated to growing crops.
Today they grow tomatoes in a greenhouse, organizing their work with planning that seemed impossible a few years ago.
They calculate the cost of supplies, project expenses, and save money for the next planting.
But it wasn’t always like this.
For a long time, decisions were made without clear tools to calculate costs, plan investments, or think about the future of the crops.
"Before, we didn’t know how much we were going to spend or how to plan production," says Ana Julia.
Things began to change when the group joined a training program led by ALFI.
Although Ana Julia had received training before, this experience was different.
"When I came to ALFI and really understood how to apply what I learned, it was like putting my feet on the ground," she remembers.
The learning did not stay in theory. Today the group calculates every expense, organizes production, and for the first time, saves money for the next planting.
"Now we know how much each supply will cost and we are saving money for the new production. That means we really learned," she explains proudly.
For Ana Julia, the change is also personal.
"I never imagined, at my age, that I could learn all this and use it."
But the impact is not only individual.
The process also strengthened women’s leadership in the community.
"Women are capable. Not only of learning, but also of putting it into practice in production."
Stories like Ana Julia’s show how financial education can become a real tool for social change.
The Origin of ALFI: Democratizing Financial Education
The story of ALFI begins with a simple but important question:
Why do so many people make big financial decisions without ever receiving financial education?
In much of Latin America, millions finish school without learning basics like budgeting, saving, financial planning, or responsible credit use.
Without these tools, many economic decisions are made by intuition or experience, which can limit personal and community growth opportunities.
ALFI was created to democratize access to financial education, using innovative tools and digital technology to bring this knowledge to more people.
The project was designed with a central idea: financial education must be practical, accessible, and relevant to daily life.
Instead of focusing only on theory, the tools developed by ALFI aim to help people apply what they learn in real situations.

Digital Innovation to Expand Access
One of the key elements in ALFI’s development has been the use of digital tools to expand access to financial education.
Digital platforms allow more dynamic and interactive learning experiences, making financial concepts easier and more accessible.
In addition, technology makes it possible to reach communities that traditionally had less access to formal education programs.
This approach has allowed the project to grow significantly.
Currently ALFI has more than 500,000 active users and has impacted more than two million people over the years.
This growth reflects a growing need: more and more people are looking for tools to better manage their resources and make informed financial decisions.
The Impact of World Summit Awards Recognition
Being recognized by the World Summit Awards in 2023, was an important moment in the project’s development.
The international recognition not only validated the use of digital tools to democratize financial education, but also increased the project’s visibility and connected it to a global network of social innovators.
Being part of the WSA community made it easier to share experiences with other projects that use technology to address social challenges.
These conversations helped identify common lessons, explore new ideas, and better understand how to scale digital solutions with social impact.
In addition, the recognition helped strengthen the project’s credibility with institutions interested in promoting financial education, creating new opportunities for collaboration.
Beyond the award itself, being part of the WSA community has meant joining an international network committed to using technology to create positive change in society.
The Biggest Lesson Learned Along the Way
The development of ALFI has been full of many lessons.
One of the most important has been understanding that technology alone does not create social impact.
Digital solutions only bring real change when they are designed with people’s real needs in mind.
In financial education, this means tools must be simple, easy to understand, and useful in daily life.
Another important challenge has been making solutions work in very different contexts.
The economic, social, and cultural realities of users can vary a lot, so tools must adapt to different environments.
Overcoming this challenge required combining technological innovation with direct work in the field, making sure the solutions truly respond to community needs.
The Challenges of Social Entrepreneurs
Social entrepreneurs who create digital solutions in Latin America face several structural challenges.
One of the main challenges is access to financing for projects that aim to create social impact as well as economic sustainability.
Many social innovation initiatives need time to grow and show their impact, which can be difficult in ecosystems where investment often focuses on short-term financial returns.
Another important challenge is the digital gap.
Although internet access has increased in the region, there are still inequalities in connectivity, access to devices, and digital skills.
For projects like ALFI, this means designing tools that can be used by different types of users and in different technological contexts.
There is also the challenge of integrating financial education into formal education systems, which requires collaboration between governments, schools, and social organizations.
Looking to the Future
The path of ALFI continues to evolve.
The goal is still the same as at the beginning: bring financial education closer to people and turn it into a real tool for economic empowerment.
Digital technologies will continue to play a key role in this process, allowing the creation of tools that are more accessible, dynamic, and adapted to users’ needs.
However, the real driving force of the project will continue to be human impact.
Every person who learns to plan expenses, organize finances, or save to reach a goal represents a step toward a more inclusive and resilient society.
The Value of the Global Community
The global World Summit Awards community represents a unique network of innovators who use technology to create social impact.
For projects like ALFI, this network offers opportunities for collaboration, learning, and sharing experiences with initiatives from different parts of the world.
Looking to the future, strengthening these international networks may be key to expanding the impact of solutions like ALFI and continuing to develop new ways to bring financial education to more people.
Because, as Ana Julia’s story shows, when knowledge becomes accessible, even small changes in financial decisions can transform the future of people and their communities.
