Johann P. Malmquist holds a BS in Mathematics and Physics and a Ph.D. in Computer Science. He received scholarships from the Institute of International Education and IBM, and his doctoral dissertation was titled “The Access Path Minimization in Networked Structured Databases.”

Johann has worked at IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, where he contributed to the development of the Query-By-Example database management system. He also worked for the Ministry of Finance in Iceland for five years, overseeing the computerization of the Icelandic government and developing policies for using networked PCs for government workers as early as 1983.

In 1985, Johann became a Full Professor at the University of Iceland, where he served as Chairman of the Department of Computer Science and Dean of the Faculty of Science. He has consulted for companies like Apple Computer and Software AG and founded several successful software companies, including GoPro and Hugvakinn, the latter achieving over a million downloads in the Nokia OVI store.
