Maternal Mortality is a web application maternalmortalityportal.org designed to raise awareness about and to provide a platform for interaction among health workers to facilitate the achievement of Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 5: Improvement of maternal health. Some of the special features of this application include surveys/polls prepared by health-workers for their colleagues, as an informal way of collating data on maternal health, before certified figures are published by the World Bank and other statistical authorities. Maternal Mortality also features a display of each country's maternal health statistics from World Bank data, allowing comparison of any two selected country profiles, as well as a blog feature for health professionals. The application also includes a wiki feature where registered professionals can contribute content to a country's profile. Maternal Mortality is designed for both public and professional use: a guest can visit any page except the blog page which is accessible only to health workers registered with the website. The login feature is presently open to the general public, allowing the creation of personal profiles and interaction with others. The aim of the Maternal Mortality portal is to lead the professional health worker to a higher level of knowledge, while at the same time increasing efficiency in decision making, thus helping mothers and health workers alike to reap the live-saving benefits of information-sharing.
