Social MDGs is the brainchild of a group of young social entrepreneurs looking to harness the power of social media to create a destination where students can follow in real time what people world wide are publishing about the United Nations and the MDGs. The web application allows users to instantly see content posted on social media sites such as Twitter, Youtube, and Wordpress. Users are able to click on the headline that interests them and are directed to the original location of the story. The idea began after the election in Iran when social media was a key factor in finding out how people were reacting. We wanted to apply that same idea of direct engagement of people and their comments on the MDGs and created a web application that allows student journalists to connect directly to people engaged in the MDGs. Social MDGs uncovers what real people are writing about the MDGs rather than what the large media organizations are reporting. The site also enables young people to connect with or get involved in MDG related organizations that solve particular issues
