Started by teens in 2012, FoodSync is a food recovery program that tackles the interrelated problems of hunger and waste. Our world faces a substantial food distribution problem; at the same time as 870 million people suffer from hunger, between 30-50% of food goes to waste. To address this, this youth team rescues safe, leftover food from vendors and redistributes this food to homeless shelters and programs in need. In the process, they reduce hunger and mitigate potential waste. Critical to othis unique program is the use of open-source mapping technology, which enables participants to record and track the impact of food donations real-time.
