Because every drip matters.
By Intissare Mouamine

The central theme of the 2023 Global Congress, planet_ hack_ _ serves as an acknowledgment of the escalating climate crisis and the imperative for innovative, eco-friendly solutions. The selection of Chile as the host country is a deliberate nod to Chile's pivotal role in the realm of climate action and sustainability. This decision is underlined by the fact that a substantial 21% of Chile's landmass is designated as protected territory, with the Patagonian forest, by some estimates, exhibiting a remarkable ability to absorb three times more CO2 per hectare than the renowned Amazon rainforest. In addition, the global transition to green energy will rely heavily on Lithium (a critical ingredient of EV’s, Solar Panels and batteries). This means Chile, the second biggest producer of Lithium in the planet, will play a critical role in this transition.

Cerro Dominador Solar Thermal Plant, in the Antofagasta Region of Chile

Chile's commitment to fostering a greener nation is further evidenced by its commendable strides in clean energy adoption, with over 52% of its electrical grid sourced from renewable and clean energy. Looking forward, the country has set the ambitious goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. The environmental dedication extends beyond policy to impactful private initiatives, exemplified by Kristine Thompkins, former CEO of Patagonia and The North Face, who made the largest private land donation in history - nearly 1 million acres - to the Chilean government. This donation was given under the condition of the government operating this vast expanse as a private park, and got global media attention, putting Patagonia on the map for both entrepreneurs and investors alike.

Kristine Thompkins, former CEO of Patagonia, who made the largest private land donation in history to the Chilean government

This media buzz, paired with the fact that Chile has one of the most stable economies in the western hemisphere as well as business friendly tax laws, helped nurture an entrepreneurial ecosystem that is currently thriving, turning small rural towns in Patagonia into important centers of innovation and knowledge exchange.

One of these towns, Frutillar, is where WSA will be hosting this year’s grand Global Congress on April 14 - 18. Join WSA in getting to know Chile’s green tech ecosystem, exploring this beautiful area, and witnessing firsthand the positive impact of a nation dedicated to environmental stewardship. As WSA delves into the theme of planet_ hack_ _ the host country's commitment to addressing the climate crisis and fostering eco-friendly solutions provides a unique backdrop for meaningful discussions, collaborations, and knowledge exchange. Don't miss this opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and contribute to the global dialogue on creating a sustainable and resilient future. WSA looks forward to welcoming you to Chile for an inspiring and impactful experience. See you in Frutillar!

UN International Day of Women & Girls in Science

Addressing global challenges in the Sustainable Development Agenda requires increased female participation in STEM, bringing diverse perspectives and talent. The UN Day of Women & Girls in Science underscores the crucial role they play and highlights the urgency of enhancing their involvement.

Where are women in STEM?

Despite the widely acknowledged criticality of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields for national economies, achieving gender equality within these domains remains a formidable challenge across the global landscape.

According to the UN, the demand for STEM skills in the European labor market is anticipated to nearly triple, soaring from 8% to 23% of the workforce between 2015 and 2025. In contrast, the projected rise in employment within STEM-related sectors is a mere 6.5%. This discrepancy underscores a persistent imbalance.

Even as the Fourth Industrial Revolution propels technological fields forward, a gender gap persists as 28% of engineering graduates and 40% of graduates in computer science and informatics are women. The United Nations warns that women stand to lose five jobs for every one gained through Industry 4.0, compared to the loss of three jobs by men for every one gained.

The Gender Gap - Contributing Factors

Stereotypes: Persistent associations of STEM fields with masculine qualities discourage girls and women from pursuing STEM education and careers.

Lack of role models: The underrepresentation of women in STEM leadership poses a challenge, limiting role models and mentors for aspiring girls and women.

Unconscious bias: Systemic biases in hiring, promotion, and grant funding contribute to the underrepresentation of women in STEM, requiring examination and rectification.

Work-life balance: The demanding nature of STEM careers may lead some women to opt-out or work part-time to manage family responsibilities, impacting career progression.

Hacking the Gap

Encouraging girls in STEM: Initiatives like WSA Winners, GirlBOT and DiGIRLab are increasing girls access to STEM-based education.

Inclusive workplaces: Addressing biases, implementing diversity policies, and offering mentorship foster inclusivity. WSA Winner Laboratoria, is a job-placement platform where tech and IT companies can find female tech talent.

Female role models: Prioritising diversity in hiring is crucial for increasing women's representation in STEM leadership.

Professional development: Training and networking events equip women with skills and confidence in STEM.

Addressing structural barriers: Tackling issues like the gender pay gap is crucial for dismantling structural barriers to gender equity in STEM.

Solutions

In harnessing the opportunities presented by the Fourth Industrial Revolution, a fundamental requirement is a level playing field in terms of access to enablers such as education and information. In 2016, the United Nations’ Human Rights Council affirmed the significance of applying a comprehensive human rights-based approach to expanding access to the internet, considering it a fundamental right.

Closing the gender gap in STEM is a multifaceted challenge requiring a comprehensive approach — from instilling confidence in girls within families to creating incentives for women to join and stay in STEM. Noteworthy projects recognized by the WSA Alumni for their achievements in the UN Sustainable Development Goals are actively addressing the issues faced by women and girls in STEM through innovative digital solutions.

Throughout the hackathon, teamwork was pivotal as participants grouped together to bring their ideas to life, guided by insights from seasoned experts in technology and innovation. The event emphasized practical skills, merging design thinking with effective presentation techniques, enabling participants to clearly articulate their AI-driven projects.

The culmination of the hackathon was a showcase event, where the teams presented their projects to an audience of their peers, educators, and tech enthusiasts. This final phase was not just about competition but celebrating the collective effort and creativity of the participants, highlighting the potential of AI in driving positive change within the education sector.

This AI Hackathon, a first of its kind in Damascus and supported by notable organizations like the UNFPA and Sanad Development Foundation, was not merely a competition but a platform that fostered curiosity, learning, and innovation among young minds. Organized meticulously by Kawkab Abqar, it stood as a testament to the power of collaboration and the vital role of technology in shaping future generations. The event, through its blend of education and competition, paved the way for more such initiatives, aiming to nurture the tech talents of tomorrow and embed AI into the fabric of educational advancements.

At the beginning of March, Opencampus, an educational initiative, hosted its Prototyping Week in Kiel, where participants worked on a startup project within a week. They could either bring their own idea or work on someone else's. At the start, each idea was presented to the group, teams were formed and everyone got to know each other.

The business ideas came from all sorts of topics: From dog treats made of cheese, an AI-supported beauty product finder to a healthy work chair. A few people already had a running business and needed some help in website building or marketing, too.

Approximately 50 people participated, working on a total of 16 ideas. The week was divided into working phases and workshops covering topics such as artificial intelligence, business model development, presentation skills, and pitching. In addition, prototypes were created and tested with customers to gather feedback.

At the end of the week, each team had the opportunity to pitch their project in a beautiful local cinema hall and receive further feedback. The week concluded with an Aftershow party in a cozy coworking space and café.

Personally, this week gave me so much energy and confidence in working on my Startup ideas and sharing my experiences with others. It is an amazing feeling to be surrounded by like-minded folks who want to build something valuable for society. I would love to do this multiple times a year as it was amazing to see what can be achieved within a week.

I think these types of focused work weeks should be mandatory in schools and jobs to craft important skills of students and employees. Not only work-related skills, but for life basically.

I am glad that Opencampus is offering such amazing experiences in my town. They are also an education program with lots of different courses about Machine Learning, Game Development and Starting a Startup. For more information have a look at their website or Linkedin:

Like the WSA Global Award, WSA's Young Innovators Award celebrates projects that are helping achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs). Like with the WSA Global Award, the projects must be either on the market or market ready. However, for the Young Innovators Award, participants must be no older than 26 years old. This year WSA received over 740 applications from young innovators dedicated to digital innovation solving pressing challenges, coming from 100 different countries across the globe.

The Young Innovators Award goes through a similar jury process as the WSA Global Award, but with a different set of Jurors who are selected specifically for the Young Innovators Award. The Online Jury goes through all applicants and selects a shortlist of projects showcasing extraordinary ingenuity. After this the Young Innovators Grand Jury convenes to discuss the shortlist, and selects the final winners.

WSA is proud to welcome these new projects to our network of WSA winners.

The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) is a global multistakeholder platform that convenes stakeholders to deliberate on public policy issues related to the Internet. The recent IGF gathering, which included esteemed WSA members, including WSA Chairperson Professor Peter Bruck, shed light on the pressing challenges of the digital age. In this era, public policy and governments must take critical steps to protect the Internet.

One significant topic at the recent Internet Governance Forum in Kyoto, Japan, was the Global Digital Compact for the upcoming United Nations Summit of the Future in 2024. From this forum, eight overarching issues emerged, spotlighting areas where policymakers and governments must take action.

The WSA winners play a pivotal role in addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by the digital age. They engage with the eight themes of the forum, providing innovative solutions and applications that contribute to the discussions and initiatives presented.

Here is a more detailed analysis of how WSA-winning innovations have addressed the challenges and embraced the solutions posed by digital technology across the eight themes identified at IGF:

    1. AI & Emerging Technologies:
WSA winners frequently harness AI and emerging technologies to create solutions that tackle societal challenges. Their work exemplifies responsible AI development, ethical governance, and inclusivity. By showcasing AI applications that benefit various sectors, they contribute to discussions about the responsible use of AI for a sustainable and equitable digital future.
    2. Avoiding Internet Fragmentation:
Internet fragmentation poses a threat to global connectivity and functionality. WSA winners actively counter this threat through their cross-border and globally applicable solutions. Their solutions often address cybersecurity challenges and online safety concerns. By offering innovative approaches to safeguard online spaces, they reinforce the importance of global cooperation, legal responses, and responsible AI use to protect rights and maintain open standards.
    4. Data Governance and Trust:
The extensive use of data, powered by technologies, presents regulatory challenges. WSA winners contribute by showcasing data-driven solutions that respect privacy and ethical data practices. They advocate for secure cross-border data sharing, robust privacy rules, and inclusive discussions, emphasizing trust in data governance.
    5. Digital Divides and Inclusion:
WSA winners embody the importance of inclusivity and bridging digital divides. Many of their projects focus on providing meaningful, affordable access to the Internet for marginalized communities. Their emphasis on digital literacy and addressing offline inequalities aligns with the IGF's goal of ensuring that everyone, regardless of location or background, can benefit from the digital age.
    6. Global Digital Governance and Cooperation:
WSA winners represent a diverse global community of innovators who actively promote an inclusive and multistakeholder approach. They align with the IGF's vision for positive global digital governance, addressing sustainability, human rights, accessibility, and governance. Their work fosters cooperation and inclusivity among various stakeholders in the digital ecosystem.
    7. Human Rights and Freedoms:
WSA winners actively contribute to the promotion of human rights and freedoms online. Their solutions often embody the principles of inclusivity, safety, and the upholding of human rights. By improving the monitoring and implementation of digital rights, they ensure that online spaces respect both civil and political rights as well as economic, social, and cultural rights.
    8. Sustainability & Environment:
Digital technologies can both aid environmental protection and pose ecological challenges. WSA winners, through their innovative digital solutions, address sustainability and environmental issues. They promote the responsible use of technology to minimize its negative ecological footprint, aligning with global efforts to balance technological advancements with environmental conservation.

In December 2023, the 28th annual United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP28) climate change summit convened in Dubai, addressing the urgent need for collaborative efforts to combat climate change. The two-day event emphasized the pivotal roles of private capital, policymakers, and key financial actors in achieving the ambitious goals set forth by the Paris Agreement. Representing the world's most comprehensive multilateral decision-making forum on climate change, COP28 aimed to formulate strategies to limit global temperature rise, support vulnerable communities in adapting to climate change impacts, and strive for net-zero emissions by 2050.

The WSA and its community are committed to contribute to global agendas of the UN and therefore we are sharing the insights from our WSA Youth Ambassadors who were active participants in COP28. Their presence at this influential gathering underscores the importance of including diverse voices, particularly those of the younger generation, in shaping the discourse around climate action.

Here is the account of WSA Youth Ambassador Malkia John

Being a Youth Ambassador allowed me to dive deep into the heart of climate action. From engaging discussions with global leaders to participating in impactful sessions on gender and climate nexus, the journey was nothing short of inspiring. As a Social Media Ambassador for IRENA, I had the privilege of amplifying the voices of youth in the energy sector, contributing to meaningful dialogues on sustainable practices.

Exploring corporate climate strategies with Standard Chartered and Business Fights Poverty added a unique perspective to my COP28 adventure. The insights gained will undoubtedly shape my ongoing work with FemPower Connect, where I'm dedicated to empowering female students in the energy and climate space.

Participating in Kenya's pavilion conversations shed light on the remarkable sustainability efforts in my home country. It was an honor to showcase our initiatives, including Glow and Grow, addressing menstrual health and environmental sustainability.

The Gender and Climate Nexus conversations with WGC and MENA feminists were particularly enlightening, reinforcing the intersectionality of gender and climate issues. As a representative of She Leads, I actively contributed to discussions on advancing youth-led climate policies, aligning with the AU Agenda 2063.

Beyond official engagements, the vibrant energy of COP28 extended to networking events, where I connected with like-minded individuals passionate about creating a sustainable future. Touring Dubai added an extra layer of cultural richness to the experience, making COP28 a holistic and unforgettable journey.

Here is the account of WSA Youth Ambassador Joud Khattab

I had the privilege of participating in this year's COY18 and COP28 as part of the Arab Youth Technical Fellowship (AYTF), a program initiated by the Arab Youth Center in the UAE. The fellowship focused on equipping Arab youth with the tools and skills to scale innovative tech solutions addressing global challenges, with a specific emphasis on climate tech solutions in light of the UAE hosting COP28.

Key Takeaways: A Source of Hope and Inspiration

Reflecting on my participation, I am filled with hope and inspiration, not only due to the high-level decisions made but, more importantly, because of the emerging generation of young leaders committed to addressing the climate crisis. I am particularly inspired by the diversity of voices, especially from young women, representatives from the Global South, and indigenous communities, who are leading the charge across various fields. As stewards of our own futures, our collective energy, know-how, and willpower are poised to generate meaningful change globally without leaving vulnerable communities behind.

My takeaway from COP28 emphasizes the recognition that our voices and actions hold significant impact. This realization underscores the importance of both advocacy and tangible steps to drive change, especially in the context of elevating youth awareness about the pivotal role of technology in achieving the sustainable goals of COP28.

The Intersection of Innovation and Environmental Activism at COY: A Data and Tech Perspective

As a data and tech expert immersing myself in the dynamic environment of COY, the intersection of innovation and environmental activism became a captivating focal point. The workshops and discussions not only enriched my understanding of environmental insights but also highlighted the pivotal role of data and technology in shaping the future of sustainability.

COY served as a catalyst for recognizing the transformative power of technology within the broader context of global sustainability efforts. The potential for data-driven decision-making and the integration of smart technologies emerged as key takeaways, revealing a landscape where my expertise could significantly contribute to solving complex environmental challenges.

SoilMend: Transformative Solutions for Sustainable Agriculture

A transformative highlight of COP28 was the presentation of our project, "SoilMend," at the youth hub pavilion. SoilMend, an AI-based solution, is designed to rehabilitate and revive soils affected by misuse practices or disasters. Harnessing advanced analytics and machine learning, SoilMend offers solutions to assess, restore, and enhance soil quality for sustainable agriculture. By leveraging predictive modeling, the project identifies regions susceptible to future adversities, paving the way for proactive protective measures. SoilMend stands as a testament to the transformative potential of technology in addressing pressing environmental challenges.
